September- remember to start your spring planting and pick the last of the summer fruits.
Seeds
Buy some packets of sweet peas and sow them now in trays the greenhouse or in a cold frame to ensure you have plenty of early summer flowers for next next year. Sweet peas grow as soon as the weather gets warm enough and will be ready for planting out next spring.
Planting
Get out in the garden on a nice day and plant some new spring bulbs. Get different varieties of daffodils in by before the month end, along with fritillaries, crocuses and grape hyacinths. please note, whilst they are available now in garden centres tulip bulbs are best left until November.
Harvesting
September is the perfect time to pick your apples and blackberries from the hedgerows for home-made pies and jam. Remember to try and pick blackberries that are away from the road as traffic pollution can contaminate them and reduce taste. Don't fall into the hedgerow it can hurt, take a stick with a hook on and pull the branches towards you
Wild Birds
Don't forget to feed the birds in the garden this month, swallows and house martins will begin flying south for the winter and need that extra energy. Keep your bird feeders and birdbaths topped up as this will encourage more "replacement" birds to visit your garden as autumn sets in. Wild Birds very quickly learn where its going to be an easier winter for them if there is ample food regularly supplied from you. Take a look at the different seeds available at your garden centre or pet shop and put peanuts or <st1:country-regionw:ston><st1:placew:ston>niger seed out and see the beautiful birds these attract.
